Battery Park City's Outdoor Museum
Posted in citylivingExplore Battery Park City's innovative art program
Battery Park City's stunning waterfront offers more than just great river views. With a community emphasis on beautiful public spaces it is no wonder that Battery Park City is home to one of the country’s most innovative public art programs. Consisting of 20 permanent commissions and various temporary programs, exploring Battery Park City’s public art program is an intriguing and scenic way to spend an afternoon.
Much of the artwork was commissioned by the Battery Park City Authority to integrate the artwork into the fabric of the community. Designed to enhance the viewer’s experience of the landscape, many of the works created act as markers or symbolic passageways throughout the parks.
However, some commissions stand out more than others, in Teardrop Park the rock “ice wall” interacts and blends with the landscape while a commission Sol LeWitt’s bright blue Loopy Doopy mural is more clearly visible. The painted words on the street, titled Halos for New York City by Michael Mercil is a more thought provoking piece that references the eclectic nature of the surrounding area.
